Adoptions

Adoption is one of the most joyful and meaningful legal processes a family can go through. The Rhodes Law Firm is honored to help Louisiana families grow through adoption — guiding you through every step with care and expertise.

Adoption in Louisiana is governed by the Children's Code, Title XII. The process varies depending on the type of adoption — whether it is a step-parent adoption, an intrafamily adoption, a private agency adoption, or a direct placement adoption. Each type has its own procedural requirements, timelines, and legal considerations. We are experienced in all forms of Louisiana adoption and will help make the process as smooth and efficient as possible for your family.

Step-Parent Adoption

Step-parent adoption is one of the most common forms of adoption in Louisiana. It allows a step-parent to legally adopt their spouse's child, creating a permanent legal parent-child relationship. For the adoption to proceed, the biological parent who is not the custodial parent must either consent to the adoption or have their parental rights terminated. We guide families through this process with sensitivity and efficiency.

Private & Agency Adoption

Private adoptions and agency-facilitated adoptions involve the placement of a child with an adoptive family through direct consent of the birth parent(s) or through a licensed adoption agency. Louisiana law requires a home study, consent of the birth parent(s) or termination of their parental rights, and a court proceeding to finalize the adoption. We work with adoptive families throughout this process to ensure legal compliance and a successful outcome.

Termination of Parental Rights

In some cases — particularly where a biological parent has abandoned the child, failed to support them, or been found to be abusive — it may be necessary to seek termination of that parent's rights before an adoption can proceed. We represent both adoptive parents seeking termination and biological parents facing termination proceedings, ensuring that every client's rights are fully protected throughout the process.
